The revised Roman Missal provides us with the option to celebrate an Extended Form of the Vigil of Pentecost. Like the Easter Vigil, this celebration includes additional scripture readings that provide greater context to the working of God’s Spirit from the very beginning of creation. As the Easter Season formally begins with the celebration of the Easter Vigil, it is most fitting that we conclude the season with the same solemnity. We heard the words of Christ proclaimed last weekend in the Gospel according to John, preparing the disciples for his ascension, which we celebrate today, saying, “If you love me, keep my commandments, and will ask the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; the Spirit of truth…” The assurance that he still resides with us is strong, and we are convinced of it daily. Please consider participating in this great celebration, if you are able, and take time during this time of Pentecost to open your hearts to the Holy Spirit. Let him speak to you, and accept him as your comforter, advocate, and guide. Let him set your heart afire.
