“It is in learning music that many hearts learn love.” ~ Anonymous

It is almost impossible to imagine a Sunday Mass or great feast of our liturgical year without music. Music has the power to color our celebrations, and serves to carry our spirits to the heavens, inspiring prayer of the highest order. For many, nothing brings forth wonderful memories like great music.

The wide variety of music ministries at St. Ann’s are here to serve Our Lord at a wide variety of liturgical celebrations, and in a wide variety of ways. Whatever your background, language, or cultural tradition, we hope that we can help you connect with God through the great gift of music.

Additionally, we hope that we can get you involved! Our ministries are growing, and we’d love for you to be a part of it. Check out the descriptions below to find out how you can get involved, even if it’s just finding a comfortable spot in your pew and enjoying the beauty of sacred music. At all times, keep a song in your heart!

Instrumental Opportunities

Bell Choir

The Bell Choir offers their gifts at selected liturgies throughout the Fall and Spring seasons, and plays on a two-octave set of tonechimes. Due to the collaborative nature of the instrument, it is typically not possible to join after rehearsals for a given season begin. If you are interested in joining this wonderful group, please contact Zack Ross at stann.musicministry@gmail.com, or (919) 934-2084 (x. 222)

Instrumentalists

The music ministry welcomes any and all who are proficient with their given instrument to offer their gifts to the glory of God during our liturgical celebrations. If you are interested in offering your musical gift for celebrations in English, please contact Zack Ross at stann.musicministry@gmail.com, or (919) 934-2084 (x. 222). The music ministry reserves the right to request an audition.

The Ministry of Cantor and Psalmist

The Ministry of Cantor is a liturgical role whose prominence has been re-asserted in our tradition. The cantor serves as the primary leader of sung prayer and hymn-singing at many liturgies. Additionally, cantors are typically called upon to lead the Responsorial Psalm and Gospel Acclamation, even when the choir is present.

The Masses in English which are served by a cantor alone are:

  • 4:30pm on Saturdays
  • 8:00am on Sundays
  • 7:00pm on Sundays

The Ministry of Cantor is a spiritual one as well as a musical one. Cantors are not performers, but leaders of song and prayer. Spiritual maturity such that a person understands this difference is essential to the ministry. However, a certain level of musical aptitude is absolutely essential.

Anyone interested in serving as a cantor is to contact Zack Ross at stann.musicministry@gmail.com or (919) 934-2084 (x. 222). The music ministry reserves the right to request auditions and interviews with the prospective cantor.
