Faith Formation Registration

2017 – 2018 FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION

Faith Formation registration has begun for the upcoming catechetical year that will begin the weekend of September 9/10, 2017. Please print out and follow the directions on the following document:

A short word on discernment for sacramental prep… If your child is to be enrolled in sacramental prep (first reconciliation, first communion and confirmation) it is understood that there will be weekly participation at the weekend mass. If you are not ready or willing to comply with this requisite, your discernment should be not to enroll your child into the sacramental program. Participation in just the catechesis classes will not be considered adequate preparation for the reception of the sacraments. The Church has too many members “in name only”. We are not interested in enabling a dead, cultural Catholicism.

CONFIRMATION

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OUR YOUNG PEOPLE WHO RECEIVED THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION ON MARCH 25TH!

If you are interested in registering for confirmation preparation, we will begin open enrollment on May 1st, 2017. Our catechetical year will begin on the weekend of September 9/10. We follow the guidelines given to us by the diocese of Raleigh regarding the length and content of confirmation preparation. There are two years of catechetical preparation required for adolescents desiring to recieve the sacrament. ATTENDANCE AT SUNDAY MASS EVERY WEEK IS OBLIGATORY IN ORDER TO COMPLETE PREPARATION FOR CONFIRMATION. This is not my rule. It is a commandment of God (see Exodus 20:1-17) as well as a precept and law of the Church (see Code of Canon Law 1247-1248; Catechism of the Catholic Church 2182-2188). If your family is not willing to make the commitment to fulfill this basic requirement of our relationship with God, you may have to discern whether it is the appropriate time to begin preparation for the sacrament of confirmation.

WHAT IS CONFIRMATION REALLY??

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
1. Baptism,
2. The Eucharist, and
3. The sacrament of Confirmation
Together constitute the “sacraments of Christian initiation,” whose unity must be safeguarded.

It must be explained to the faithful that the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace.
For “by the sacrament of Confirmation, [the baptized] are:
1. more perfectly bound to the Church and are
2. enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit.

Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.”

It is evident from its celebration that the effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost.
From this fact, Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace:
– it roots us more deeply in the divine filiation which makes us cry, “Abba! Father!”
– it unites us more firmly to Christ;
– it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us;
– it renders our bond with the Church more perfect
– it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross:

A candidate for Confirmation who has attained the age of reason must profess the faith, be in the state of grace, have the intention of receiving the sacrament, and be prepared to assume the role of disciple and witness to Christ, both within the ecclesial community and in temporal affairs.

CONFIRMATION SPONSORS:

Each Candidate should choose a confirmation sponsor. This is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Try and choose someone that you know will be of assistance to you on your journey towards holiness and faithfulness. Canon law says about Confirmation Sponsors:

Can. 892

As far as possible the person to be confirmed is to have a sponsor. The Sponsor’s function is to take care that the person confirmed behaves as a true witness of Christ and faithfully fulfils the duties inherent in this sacrament.

Can. 893

  • 1 A person who would undertake the office of sponsor must fulfill the conditions mentioned in can. 874 which reads:
    • 1 To be admitted to undertake the office of sponsor, a person must:
      • be appointed by the candidate for baptism, or by the parents or whoever stands in their place, or failing these, by the parish priest or the minister; to be appointed the person must be suitable for this role and
      • have the intention of fulfilling it; be not less than sixteen years of age, unless a different age has been stipulated by the diocesan Bishop, or unless the parish priest or the minister considers that there is a just reason for an exception to be made;
      • be a catholic who has been confirmed and has received the blessed Eucharist, and who lives a life of faith which befits the role to be undertaken;
      • not labor under a canonical penalty, whether imposed or declared;not be either the father or the mother of the person to be baptized.
    • 2 A baptized person who belongs to a non-Catholic ecclesial community may be admitted only in company with a catholic sponsor, and then simply as a witness to the baptism
  • 2 It is desirable that the sponsor chosen be the one who undertook this role at baptism.

Common Questions about Sponsors

  1. Can my parents, or a parent be my confirmation sponsor? Answer: No. (see Canon Law above 893.1.1.4. Also the General Norms for the Diocese of Raleigh 3.4 reiterates this prohibition.)
  2. Can a non-Catholic be my sponsor? Answer: No.  (see Canon Law above.) Seems obvious, especially because the sponsor is someone that is chosen to help you to live your life as… A CATHOLIC!
  3. Can I have two sponsors? Answer: Depends. Usually there is only one sponsor for confirmation but when the godparents at baptism are chosen as the sponsors for confirmation, there can be two sponsors.
  4. Can two men or two women be confirmation sponsors? Answer: No. Confirmation, being the completion of the sacrament of baptism follows the same norms as baptismal godparents. Canon Law specifically prohibits two godparents (sponsors) of the same sex.
  5. Can a woman be a confirmation sponsor for a man? Answer: Yes. There is no prohibition of this, though in certain countries and cultures it is not the norm.
  6. Can someone be a sponsor if they are living in an irregular romantic relationship? Answer: No. (See General Norms for the Celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation and the Formation of Candidates of the Diocese of Raleigh 3.4.6) This includes Catholics married outside of the Church, living in “Civil Unions”, any type homosexual relationship, and those cohabitating outside of marriage.

R.C.I.A

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is the process by which those discerning their call to the Catholic Church grow in their knowledge of Christ, His Church and most importantly their relationship with God in these. The process follows the liturgical year and studies the Catholic Faith primarily through the reading and study of the Sunday readings. We gather every Sunday in our Parish Center in the “Family Room” as a group at 9:30am. If you are interested in knowing more about joining the Catholic Church or if you were baptized Catholic but never received all of the Sacraments of Initiation (First Communion and Confirmation) R.C.I.A. is what you need. Please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Patrick Ginty pginty.dre@gmail.com to start your journey.

PROGRAMAS DE SEGUIMIENTO

Catecismo Con Padre Alberto

(919) 934-2084

Contact Patrick Ginty pginty.dre@gmail.com for inquiries.

St. Ann Parish encourages our parents to the first formators of their children in the faith. We understand that many times our parents want to form their children for the sacraments. In order to facilitate this we can help guide you regarding curriculums that are available as well as providing retreats, rehearsals and dates for the sacraments. All families will be expected to meet the minimum requirements set forth by the diocese for reception of the sacraments. Please see the documents below for more information.
